SILENCE
.الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ) : رُبَّ كلامٍ جَوابُهُ السُّكوتُ
“Many a speech is answered by silence.”
Imam Ali (a)
(Ghurar Al-Hikam)
(Ghurar Al-Hikam)
Sometimes we feel exhausted, done with everything, and everyone. Sometimes we intuitively know that being strategically silent is much better than revealing our thoughts about the situation we’re in. There is no doubt in the significance of expressing your ideas and emotions through your words. But, suppressing them when needed saves you from unnecessary trouble. One cannot get along with other human beings or resolve conflicts without suppressing what s/he strongly urges to say. Words have the ability to intensify the existing tension to a whole new degree. Silence allows us to take our time and stops us from giving an impulsive reaction.
On the other hand, those pointless dramas are not even worth your energy and attention. Responding to such affairs makes you sound as stupid as the person who’s creating the fuss. Pulling back for a while and letting our minds evaluate our words prevents us from being embarrassed and regretting later. It also encourages the other person to reflect upon their attitude and phrases and opens a doorway for them to realize and accept their mistake.

The absence of an immediate verbal response is a sign of both respect and intimidation at the same time. It is a way of showing respect to yourself and to them as well, even if they’re unable to recognize it. Today we’re constantly being bombarded by the false definition of being tough and powerful. But if we look closely, it is the silence that gives us control over the circumstances and people we are dealing with. Now we are in charge of setting the tone and turning the direction of the conversation wherever we want. Being quiet makes you appear unpredictable leaving your rival with no amount of information about your approach. The less you speak, the more likely you’re to utter without errors, plus your ignorance and flaws remain hidden.
Saying less than necessary is a fundamental law of speech because less is more. Always.
